Our lives bring us many different seasons, but with the start of each new month; we are given a gift to refresh and re-evaluate where we are. With an increased motivation, positive changes are easier to make. These monthly short stories are designed to help you glide through the year with a sense of purpose and an understanding of what your own true nature is.
“ Climb the mountains and get their good tidings. Nature’s peace will flow into you as sunshine flows into trees. The winds will blow their own freshness into you, and the storms their energy, while the cares will drop away from you like the leaves of Autumn”
-- John Muir
Follow in a Hawk’s flight and rise above it all!
When life becomes swamped it’s hard to see a bigger perspective. Rising above your situation helps you think long term, and imultaneously stops anxiety about the day-to- day situations from taking root. One of the best ways to do this is to give yourself a change in scenery. September is an ideal month to go outside in a National Park. Summers months are usually the busiest time in the parks, but by Autumn most of the crowds are gone, and, more importantly, the trees are the most vibrant. The best parks to visit are old growth forests, such as Crater Lake, Acadia, the Smokies, Olympic, and the Redwood National Parks. Rocky Mountain National Park also boasts one of the most beautiful exhibitions of bright yellow quivering aspen trees in September. These color-saturated landscapes will help you see farther ahead and have peace in the moment.
Say Thank You
Take some advice from a Bristlecone Pine and honor your elders!
There’s something about those first few days in the fall when the weather cools, the shadows on the ground become long, and the trees start turning an array of reds and golds that encourages nostalgia. Perhaps it’s because trees in their autumnal state seem older, or perhaps it’s because the cooler weather implies a coming season of ancient traditions. Whatever the cause, autumn is a time of remembrance and honoring your elders. Your elders have a wisdom that adorns them like the golden autumn leaves.
Age is Beautiful
Be like a Sea Turtle and age gracefully!
Did you know that September is Healthy Aging Month? Here’s a secret: no matter your age, you are aging. Everyone, provided they are alive, is currently getting older. This is inescapable. Instead of wasting your time, money, and integrity trying to hold on to who you were five or ten or twenty years ago, spend your time learning to accept and appreciate who you are at any age and state. You are in a seasonal cycle just like an old growth forest, but no one ever says that a tree in autumn would be better suited shedding her chestnut leaves and working really hard to regrow green ones. Swim like a seat turtle and appreciate the new beauty of each of your seasons. Sea turtles know something about aging; they can live to be over 100 years old! Another interesting fact about them is that they don’t reach maturity until they’re 20-50 years old! For us humans, reaching emotional and spiritual maturity often takes much longer than reaching physical maturity.
Look for Wisdom
Listen to the Owl and trust a wise friend.
Be hoo you are, but keep the counsel of wise friends handy! The Greek goddess Athena was known for her wisdom. Her sign was an owl, signifying the animal’s association with wisdom. Athena was particularly known for helping warriors, rather than starting a conflict herself. Wise friends are like that, too! Wisdom is associated with experience and good judgment. It’s probably not hard to think of at least one person in your life whom you admire for their combination of life experiences and good judgment. Keep them around!
